1998 France-Amériques Prize

Each year, the Association France-Amériques awards two literary prizes to writers who have actively contributed to Franco-American friendship and to French knowledge of the United States. This year, Cynthia Ghorra-Gobin, whose book " Los Angeles, the unfinished American myth " was published by CNRS editions, was awarded one of the prizes.

The author describes the complex workings of the Los Angeles metropolis —the Hollywood film industry, the problems caused by earthquakes and pollution, interethnic relations, the 1992 riots, etc. Her vision and understanding of the city, as illustrated by Los Angeles, reach far beyond the strict framework of the United States and provide the reader with a clear view of the urban phenomenon.
Cynthia Ghorra-Gobin is a CNRS research director and works at the "Espace et Culture" laboratory (URA 1690 CNRS), at the University of Paris 4.
