1998 Jean-Nicod Prize


The Jean-Nicod lectures are organized by the Scientific Interest Group "Cognitive Sciences". Their aim is to promote philosophical research on cognition and acquaint the French public with works published abroad on the topic. The lecturer selected each year by the Jean-Nicod committee presents his research in a cycle of lectures, which are afterwards published in book form. The 1998 Jean-Nicod prize was awarded on June 3rd to Susan Carey, a conceptual change specialist.


Before becoming professor of psychology at New York University in 1996, Susan Carey taught for a number of years in the Brain and Cognitive Science department at MIT. She earned her Ph.D at Harvard University, where she was a member of the Center for Cognitive Studies. Susan Carey is well-known in the field of contemporary cognitive sciences. She has worked on face recognition, vocabulary acquisition and conceptual development in the human child.
She has published a book on the topic: " Conceptual change in childhood ", MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass., 1985.
