1996 CNRS-Nouvel Economiste prize
Team of the year

The CNRS-Nouvel Economiste prize was awarded to the CNRS Waves and Acoustics laboratory and to the SNECMA firm by François Bayrou, Minister of Education and Research, on Thursday, February 29, 1996.
The CNRS-Nouvel Economiste prize is awarded to successful partnerships between research teams and industrial firms, resulting in a high degree of mutual benefit. Thus, industrial firms become involved in basic research and at the same time provide laboratories with the means to test theory by developing prototypes. More than 1,000 CNRS laboratories or associated laboratories may apply to receive this prize, which amounts to a total of 130,000 FF. In order to ensure that all the research fields of the CNRS are represented in the competition, three categories have been determined: Sciences of Matter, Life Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences.
The jury's selection is based on quality criteria - quality of scientific exchanges and of industrial applications. Originality, innovation and mutual benefit to the partners are also important selection criteria.
Two years ago, the CNRS and the Nouvel Economiste decided to award an annual joint prize to the most successful partnership between a laboratory and a firm. The aim of this prize is to demonstrate the importance of basic research for economic and social development. Indeed, the CNRS has signed more than 3,800 contracts with firms. Most the the contracts binding the CNRS and its 2,000 industrial partners are « shared objective » contracts or consulting contracts.
