The CNRS is in favor of scientific cooperation at the service of progress and peace

Paris, January 8, 2003

In the context of establishment of a European research area, enlargement of the European Union, and reinforcement of its international relations, the CNRS, as a state-funded research institution and as the main partner for Universities in the field, is reasserting its attachment to international cooperation between scientific communities, as a factor in advancement of knowledge, in exchange, and in mutual understanding and openness.

The international collaborations led by the Center are based on the principle of mutual desire from the parties and on scientific and ethical responsibility. It is in this spirit that collaborations based on scientific excellence have developed over several decades between research teams associated with the CNRS and scientists from all over the world, and in particular Israeli and Palestinian researchers and academics.

In this context, the Center reasserts its desire to see scientific research, which is very often conducted through international scientific cooperation, serve economic, social and cultural development for nations and peoples, and for the benefit of peace. Faithful to these principles, which have always underpinned its action, the CNRS will continue to perform its research assignments with a view to serving the advancement of knowledge, and with respect for the diversity and well-being of peoples. It shall not therefore associate itself with any form of exclusion based on a scientific community belonging to any national or ethnic group.
