The France-Berkeley Fund is now accepting applications for 2019 grant competition until January 31 2019.

Established in 1993 as a partnership with the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the France-Berkeley Fund supports and promotes scholarly collaboration in all disciplines between the University of California and public research centers and institutions of higher learning in France.

French researchers and Japanese engineers have joined forces to develop a new electron microscope that can scan the properties of matter on very small scales of time and space. The Centre d’élaboration de matériaux et d’études structurales (CEMES) of the CNRS and the Hitachi High Technologies Corporation (HHT) will formalize the creation of a joint laboratory on July 2, 2018, the first between the CNRS and a foreign company.

The CNRS and the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israël) engage in a deeper scientific partnership

The third Franco-Mexican Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation

The third Franco-Mexican Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation, hosted by the French Embassy in Mexico and the National Council for Science and Technology of Mexico (CONACYT), has taken place in San Luis Potosi on May 29th and 30th.

Apart from participating at one of the round table during the first day of the forum on the tools for international collaboration, CNRS has also taken this opportunity to sign two agreements with its Mexican partners.

CNRS in Australia: a highly structuring cooperative framework

Between May 1st and 3rd, during a state visit to Australia by the French President accompanied by the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Franco-Australian scientific cooperation was one of the main points discussed, with the CNRS playing a significant role. On this occasion, Patrick Nédellec, director of the DERCI (European Research and International Cooperation Department) met one of the key partners of the CNRS and together they set out the major lines of a highly structuring cooperation projects, with the signing in particular of four agreements.

CNRS-GW University joint laboratory EpiDaPo: a French-US interdisciplinary lab in the heart of the United States’ capital

On the occasion of his visit to Washington D.C., in the context of French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit, Antoine Petit, President and CEO of Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) signed on April 25th 2018, together with Forrest Maltzman, George Washington (GW) University Provost, the agreement for the creation of a Joint Laboratory EpiDaPo: Epigenetics Data Politics. Its research activities will begin on July 1st 2018 on GW campus.

CONCERT-JAPAN : CALL FOR PROJECTS 2018 - Opening

The European Interest Group CONCERT-Japan (CONnecting and Coordinating European Research and technology Development with Japan) is setting up a Joint Call for research projects on the thematic area: “Functional Porous Materials”. The European Interest Group CONCERT-Japan is an international joint initiative to support and enhance science, technology and innovation cooperation between European countries and Japan. It began as an ERA-NET project funded by the 7th Framework Programme from 2011 to 2014, and is now continuing independently of EU support.

The renewal of the Georgia Tech-CNRS UMI

The signing of the renewal of the International Joint Research Unit (UMI – unite mixte internationale) Georgia Tech-CNRS between the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta in the USA), Georgia Tech Lorraine campus (Metz in France) and the CNRS was celebrated on March 8th. The ceremony was hosted by the Acting deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy, Kristina Kvien.

Lyon-Sendai : strengthening the French-Japonese collaboration on materials science and engineering

The CNRS, the University of Lyon and the University of Tohoku (Sendai, Japan) launched, on March 5th 2018, the French office of the International Joint Unit ELyTMaX . Located within both the premises of the INSA Lyon in Villeurbanne and of the Ecole Centrale de Lyon in Ecully, the office accounts for the French site of the unit created in Sendai in 2016.

CNRS signs on with India for another 5 year of cooperation in applied Mathematics

Maupertuis program: Bilateral funding program for scientific cooperation between France and Finland

The Institut Français in Helsinki, the Embassy of France in Finland and the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation have partnered again this year with the Finnish Society for Sciences and Letters and the Finnish Academy for Science and Letters in Finland to open the call for proposals of the seed funding program to initiate and strengthen bilateral cooperation in science, innovation and higher education in fields of excellence in both countries.

The CNRS and the Imperial College London have just established a joint laboratory in mathematics

On January 1st, the Imperial College of London, ranking within the 10 best universities in the world, and the CNRS, first basic research institution in Europe, have implemented an International Joint Unit (UMI) in mathematics. The Abraham de Moivre laboratory was inaugurated on Monday, 15th January in London.

1st CNRS / Polish Academy of Sciences Workshop

ERC Consolidator Grants: CNRS ranks first among European institutions

30 November 2017

The European Research Council has announced the results of the ERC Consolidator Grant Call 2017. Consolidator Grants are awarded to top researchers with at least seven and up to twelve years of experience after PhD.

No less than 329 projects will receive funding in all areas of research, of which 38 are hosted in France thus being the third country hosting ERC laureates after the United Kingdom (60 projects) and Germany (56 projects).

With 20 laureates (12 in Physical Sciences and Engineering, 6 in Life Sciences and 2 in Social Sciences and Humanities), CNRS ranks first, followed by the Max Planck Society (12 laureates) and the University of Oxford (8 laureates).

Opening of the 2018-2019 Chateaubriand Fellowship call

The Chateaubriand Fellowship call for applications is now open. The grant, offered by the Embassy of France in the US, supports outsanding American Ph.D. students who wish to conduct their research in a French laboratory within the framework of a joint research project.

The International Associated Laboratory “Center for Research on New Realisms” - LIA CRNR was officially created during a signing ceremony organized at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne on September 25th, 2017.

It associates the CNRS, the University of Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn. This strong partnership is the result of a sustained collaboration between the Sorbonne Institute of Legal and Philosophical Sciences and the International Center for Philosophy of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The CNRS and the Chinese society Infinitus inaugurated the “Hoffmann Infinitus Program”

Renewal of the partnership agreement between the Kyoto University and the CNRS

On October 1st, 2017, Dr. Juichi Yamagiwa, Kyoto University President and Prof. Alain Fuchs, CNRS President, signed an amendment extending for another four-year period the memorandum of understanding for scientific collaboration that was entered into by both institutions in 2013.

The signing ceremony was held in Kyoto outside of the 2017 STS Forum, Science and Technology in Society annual meeting.

A high-level delegation of CNRS, led by the Director of the Institute of Physics, was received at the Residence of the French Ambassador in Moscow on May 22, 2017.

On this occasion was signed the agreement establishing the Interdisciplinary Scientific Center Poncelet (ISCP). The ISCP combines the CNRS and five Russian partner institutions - the Independent University of Moscow, the Higher School of Economics, the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and two Institutes associated with the Russian Academy of Sciences ─ the Steklov Institute of Mathematics and the AA Kharkevich Institute for Problems of Transmission of Information.

Toward a stronger scientific cooperation between France and Iran

In the frame of the strengthening of relationship between France and Iran, the CNRS performed in May 2016 an exploratory visit in Iran, in order to improve its comprehension of the Iranian research landscape.

Following this first initiative and in view of enhancing mutual knowledge on new potential partners, the CNRS and the Amirkabir University (AUT) set up a scientific workshop in Teheran on April 19th, 2017.

Singapore/France: SILVER - a large scale scientific programme on the ageing of the population in cities of the future

The EIG CONCERT-Japan 4th Joint Call focusing on Efficient Energy Storage and Distribution now open

CONCERT-Japan (Connecting and Coordinating European Research and Technology Development with Japan) began as an ERA-NET project funded by the FP7 between 2011 and 2014. Its primary function is to collaboratively implement multilateral joint funding with the objective of enhancing the cooperation between European countries and Japan in various fields of STI.

CONCERT-Japan is now continuing independently of EU support as an activity of the European Interest Group (EIG), hence the name "EIG CONCERT-Japan".

Regarding the success of its last joint call in 2016 on “Food Crops and Biomass Production technologies”, the EIG CONCERT-Japan is now glad to inform that its Joint call on "Efficient Energy Storage and Distribution" is open from May 2, until July 14, 2017. Projects with an innovative dimension will be funded for a period of 3 years. 9 European and Japanese funding organizations are taking part in that Call.

Call for Joint Research Projects PRC CNRS/RFBR 2018-2020

The CNRS and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, in accordance with the Agreement signed on November 10th, 2016, organize a call for Joint Research Projects (PRC).

The aim of the competition is to grant financial support for jointly initiated research projects conducted by French and Russian scientists.

The competition supports projects in the all areas of expertise, including the fields of the human sciences.

Upcoming EIG CONCERT-Japan call for projects focuses on energy

The Government of the Republic of France in conjunction with the Indonesian Government have established the NUSANTARA Program. On January 1st, 2017, the international associated laboratory for quantum circuits and materials (LIA-LCMQ), which involves the CNRS, the University of Paris-Sud and the University of Sherbrooke (Canada), will officially be implemented and operational. The research led in this new laboratory will concern, on the one hand, the development of quantum circuits and, on the second hand, the theoretical and experimental study of quantum materials.

A new French-Japanese laboratory for the behavior of materials under extreme conditions

In order to strengthen their cooperation in materials science and engineering, the CNRS, the University of Lyon and the University of Tohoku launched, on October 4th 2016, an International Joint Unit (UMI1), located in Sendai, in Japan. Called Engineering Science Lyon – Tohoku for Materials and Systems under Extreme Conditions (ELyTMaX), this new laboratory will study the behavior of materials when submitted to extreme and complex strains. One of its goals is to understand their deterioration mechanisms over time, in order to better estimate their lifetime.

CNRS, Aix-Marseille University and MIT to extend the activities of < MSE >² International Joint Unit

On Friday, September 9th, Alain Fuchs, President of the CNRS, Yvon Berland, President of the Aix-Marseilles University and Rafael Reif, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA, signed an extension agreement for the < MSE >² International Joint Unit. The French Secretary of State, Thierry Mandon, attended the signature ceremony.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the CNRS-RFBR partnership in Moscow

On the occasion of the ceremony for the 20th anniversary of the strategic partnership between the CNRS and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), a high-level CNRS delegation led by Professor Alain SCHUHL, Director of the Institute of Physics, travelled to Moscow from November, 9th to November, 11th, 2016. This mission was the opportunity to highlight the strong scientific cooperation links which exist between French and Russian scientists, and to sign two agreements.

UWERTURA 1 CALL FOR PROPOSALS for fellowships in international research teams conducting ERC grants

The UWERTURA 1 call for proposals for fellowships in international research teams conducting ERC grants is targeted at researchers who plan to apply for a research grant to the European Research Council (ERC).

The objective of the call for proposals is to provide support to researchers conducting research at Polish research institutions with respect to the effective application for European funds and to increase their share in the group of ERC grantees. Fellowships in research teams conducting research financed with ERC grants will boost the academic profile of candidates applying for ERC grants, giving them an opportunity to acquire knowledge and indispensable experience in the international grant system. The call for proposals is organised in agreement with the ERC within the Fellowship Schemes to Visit ERC Grantees.

Call for proposals Europe - Canada

The ERA-Can+ project launched its first call for proposals. The Twinning Programme aims at supporting close collaboration between already existing European and Canadian research endeavours. Each twinning project should consist of at least one EU-funded project consortium (FP7 or Horizon 2020), and one Canadian project funded either at federal or provincial level.

CNRS & NTU (Singapore) extend collaboration in the field of renewable energies

CNRS president Alain Fuchs & Nanyang Technological University (NTU) president Bertil Andersson signed a Memoradum of Understanding at the Elysée Palace on May 18th, in the presence of French President François Hollande and Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam. This agreement is the first step in the creation of an international research network (GDRI) between the two institutions in the field of renewable energies.
