Renewal of the French-Mexican International Joint Unit LAFMIA

30 novembre 2017

Mid-November, the General director of the National Council for Science and Technology of Mexico (CONACYT), Dr. Enrique Cabrero Mendoza, came to France in a two-day mission. The main objective of his visit was the organization of the French-Mexican Forum for Science and Innovation to take place on May 29th and 30th, 2018 in Mexico.

After meeting with the French Minister for Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Dr. Cabrero Mendoza was welcomed at the CNRS by its President, Anne Peyroche. This was the occasion for the CNRS to sign the renewal agreement of the UMI LAFMIA, depending on the Institute for Information Sciences and its Interactions (INS2I).

This UMI, based within the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV) in Mexico City, was created in 2008 and develops research in the fields of computer and automatic sciences. Its focal points are on multi-scales resources management, bio-inspired metaheuristic and the control of autonomous, aerial, submarine and ground vehicles.

The LAFMIA is the result of the merging of two former LIA and gathers in France, the CNRS, Technological University Compiègne (UTC), Grenoble-Alpes University and Grenoble INP, and in Mexico, the CINVESTAV as well as the CONACYT.

During the signature ceremony, chaired by INS2I director Michel Bidoit, Anne Peyroche and Enrique Cabrero were accompanied by the Research Director of the UTC, Marie-Christine Ho-Ba-Tho and the President of the CINVESTAV, José Mustre de Leon, who travelled to France on that occasion.

This event was the opportunity to emphasize the strong ties between the CNRS and Mexico in general, and particularly between the CNRS and the CONACYT. It also highlighted the excellence of the actual structuring projects, notably the UMI located within the CINVESTAV and the one at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UMI LaSoL in mathematics). The CNRS President confirmed furthermore that the CNRS will participate in the 3rd French-Mexican Forum for Science and Technology. She also thanked the CONACYT for hosting the workshop of the UMI in America last April.

Enrique Cabrero underlined the fact that the CNRS has been a key source of inspiration for the recent creation of CONACYT chairs and that it represents a major partner for Mexican research.
