Par la décision (DEC10A006DSI) du Directeur Général du CNRS signée le 19 décembre 2009, la FR3335 intitulée Fédération de Recherche Normandie-Mathématiques est créée pour quatre ans à compter du 1er janvier 2010.

La fédération regroupe les quatre laboratoires de mathématiques de Normandie :
le LMAH, Laboratoire de Mathématiques Appliquées de l'Université du Havre, EA 3821,
le LMI, Laboratoire de Mathématiques de l'INSA de Rouen, EA 3226,
le LMNO, Laboratoire de Mathématiques Nicolas Oresme, UMR 6139 de l'Université de Caen et du CNRS,
le LMRS, Laboratoire de Mathématiques Raphaël Salem, UMR 6085 de l'Université de Rouen et du CNRS.

Cette fédération, initiée par Patrick Dehornoy et Gérard Grancher, s'inscrit naturellement dans le PRES Normandie Université en cours de construction. Elle est dirigée par Gérard Grancher.

Les objectifs principaux de la fédération Normandie-Mathématiques sont les suivants :
Développement de liens entre les différentes équipes de recherche normandes, notamment envers les doctorants ;
Obtention d'un poids accru des mathématiciens auprès des interlocuteurs externes, notamment à l'échelle régionale, en permettant aux divers laboratoires de parler d'une seule voix ;
Exploitation des convergences et des complémentarités de compétences entre les différentes équipes, soit par l'organisation d'actions conjointes (cas des convergences), soit par la mise à disposition de ressources (cas des complémentarités) ;
Développement de la concertation au sujet de la politique scientifique et des recrutements entre les différents laboratoires, tout en respectant leur autonomie de décision ;
Amélioration de la communication interne (diffusion de l'information au sein des laboratoires et entre ceux-ci) et externe (en vue d'accroître la notorie ́te ́ de nos équipes) ;
Réalisation d'actions communes à destination du grand public (diffusion de la connaissance, actions spécifiques de vulgarisation, Fête de la Science, etc.).

Fédération Charles Hermite (FR 3198)

Créée en janvier 2009, la Fédération Charles Hermite est la plus grosse Fédération de recherche en Lorraine. Elle regroupe quatre laboratoires de recherche en automatique, informatique et mathématiques, soit plus de 700 personnes.

La recherche en Automatique, Informatique et Mathématiques joue un rôle crucial dans la compréhension et la maîtrise des problèmes complexes de traitement de l'information et de modélisation que rencontrent les autres sciences et sera au coeur de la science des prochaines décennies. C'est aussi un domaine de recherche créateur de richesses et d'emplois qualifiés et par là un enjeu absolument stratégique pour les pays développés. Dans une stratégie nationale de développement de la recherche et de l'enseignement supérieur dans le domaine des STIC et des mathématiques, la Lorraine a l'objectif d'apparaître comme un pôle de recherche et de formation de niveau européen, attractif pour les meilleurs étudiants et les meilleurs scientifiques dans la compétition internationale.

La Fédération Charles Hermite est la plus grosse Fédération de recherche en Lorraine. Elle comprend environ 710 personnes dont 250 doctorants et post-doctorants, 280 enseignants-chercheurs, une vingtaine de chercheurs du CNRS, une cinquantaine de l'INRIA et 110 agents administratifs et techniques ce qui place la Lorraine au 5ième rang des centres universitaires nationaux pour les Maths-STIC.

The "Foundation for Mathematical Sciences of Paris" is a Thematic network for advanced research co-founded and co-financed by the CNRS and supports the work of 1,000 mathematicians working in 9 different UMR of the CNRS.

The "Foundation for Mathematical Sciences of Paris" is a Thematic network for advanced research (Réseau Thématique de Recherches Avancées, RTRA) co-founded and co-financed by the CNRS and supports the work of 1,000 mathematicians working in 9 different UMR of the CNRS.

The "Foundation for Mathematical Sciences of Paris", created in December 2006, offers a scientific scope that covers most of the cutting edge topics in mathematics and fundamental computer science, from the most abstract theories to the most diverse applications.

The foundation has three essential missions : to support fundamental and applied research, develop collaborations with leading global scientific institutions and develop public-private research partnerships.

The foundation is a RTRA co-founded and co-financed by the CNRS and supports the work of a thousand mathematicians working in 9 different UMR of the CNRS, providing an annual budget of nearly € 2 million to these units through excellency programs unique in France. Members of these CNRS units are very involved in the life and development of the Foundation.

Thematic networks for advanced research (RTRA) are structures created by the federal program for research n° 2006-450 of April 18, 2006 (NOR : MENX0500251L). They operate under the status of the Foundation for Scientific Cooperation (like the PRES) after signing an agreement. They consist of several Research or Higher Education Institutions, public as well as private, and sometimes private companies working together in one or more research areas. Recognized as being in the public interest, the status of scientific cooperation foundation allows RTRA to seek private sponsors.

Research units, service units or parts thereof can form a Service Network (GDS), in order to group part, or the whole, of their resources to achieve a common goal. The members of a Service Network preserve their own individuality.

The 920520SOSI decision of July 24, 1992 (amended) on the organization and functioning of operational research structures, provides some interesting details on the UMS.

The Jacques Hadamard Library (UMS 1786) : as a research library, it is for the use of mathematicians from the University Paris-Sud 11, I.H.E.S and also of some partners (Ecole Polytechnique for example).

Together with the science section of Paris-Sud university library, it acts as a CADIST (Centre d'Acquisition et de Diffusion de l'Information Scientifique et Technique) for Mathematics. This is the main reason of the library for obtaining the status of UMS.

National Mathematical Libraries Network : RNBM

National Mathematical Libraries Network, Service Network n°2755

The CNRS has created two GDS alloted to the Mathematics, the National Mathematical Libraries Network is one of them.

The National Mathematical Libraries Network (GDS 2755) was officially initiated in 2004. It was made to replace and strengthen an already existing network which had grouped since 1996 some sixty French mathematical libraries.

In 1974, an informal initiative concerning mathematical documentation, gave birth, in 1983, to a national association of mathematical libraries uniting mathematicians and librarians.

Due to a long reflection and common efforts the network was finally made durable : in 1996, the first officials of the RNBM were elected and Geneviève Sureau and Bernard Teissier were confirmed in their positions. Significantly, they made the first agreement of partnership with Springer in France.

In January 2004 an official framework for the RNBM was created : it became a CNRS Service Network (GDS 2755), with two co-directors Jean-Benoîst Bost and Liliane Zweig. Since then agreements and partnerships have encreased : with the consortium Couperin for the university and the INIST for the CNRS. The GDS was renewed in 2008 for a four year term.

The RNBM seeks to guarantee the quality, durability and specificity of mathematical documentation, and also to reinforce the libraries mutual assistantship and collaboration between librarians and researchers from other countries or other domains.

Mathematical Laboratories Computer Engineers Network : Mathrice

The CNRS has created two GDS alloted to the Mathematics, Mathrice is one of them.

Mathrice is a network is a network of computer engineers working in French mathematical laboratories .

Mathrice was created in 2000 and is now completely operational ; it regroups almost every computer network administrator of these laboratories. Mathrice has become a vital tool for the smooth operation of a number of mathematical laboratories.

Formally, Mathrice is a Service Network (GDS 2754, directed by Ph. Depouilly). It is a (virtual) place for exchange and communications between the computer engineers (or equivalent) of the different CNRS mathematical laboratories. Mathrice offers a number of facilities to the mathematical academic community (a directory, a software licence server, an on-line platform…).

The GDS was renewed in 2008 for a four year term.

Federation of Research of the Mathematical Units of Marseille (FR 2291)

To coordinate and formalize the already existing collaborations, the three laboratories, IML, CPT and LATP has gathered in the Federation of Research of the Mathematical Units of Marseilles (FRUMAM). The Research Federation 2291 was officially created on the first January 2001.

One of the main characteristic of scientific research in the Marseilles region is the presence of many top-class mathematical laboratories. These last years have seen a development of collaborations between mathematicians with other scientists. Besides this, there as been an harmonization of the science policy, a globalization of documentary resources and a new organization of research schemes.

Marseilles has become a unique site for research, and development of research, in pure and applied mathematics. Indeed, besides the Laboratory in Analysis, Topology and Probability (LATP, UMR 6632), at Château Gonbert, the research federation regroups the Center of Theoretical Physics (CPT, UMR 6207), the International Center for Mathematical Meetings (CIRM, UMS 822), one of only two such centers in the world, and the Luminy Institute of Mathematics (Institut Mathématiques de Luminy, UMR 6206) all three located at Luminy.

The research federation was begun in Marseilles in 1997. To coordinate and formalize already existing collaborations, the three laboratories, IML, CPT and LATP have formed the the Federation of Research of the Mathematical Units of Marseilles (FRUMAM). The Research Federation 2291 was officially created on January 1, 2001.

The federation is under the supervision of the universities of Aix-Marseille I, II and III, the Université du Sud-Toulon-Var and the CNRS.

Pays de Loire Research Federation in Mathematics (FR 2962)

The aim of this research structure is to federate throughout the Pays de la Loire, the mathematical skills within a single research center that would be at the highest international level, being noticeable both on a national and an international level, and which would be an engine for inter-laboratory collaborations.

Similarly to the joint research units, the Research Federations, which are composed of several UMR or EA, are recognized by the CNRS and several other organizations. Their aim is to pool resources (Ph.D. trainings, computing resources, scientific literature) or requests for resources sent to the local administrative authorities, and to promote joint scientific initiatives : through the organization of seminars and working groups, symposia or collaborations.

There are currently nine Research Federations which are mostly focused on mathematics.

Four other federations have a mathematics section without being mainly focused on mathematics :

European Research Networks

There are currently three GDRE in mathematics : GRIFGA, GREFI-MEFI and a GDRE in the field of Representation Theory.

The Research Networks in mathematics which are funded by the CNRS do not have significant resources at their disposal.

Their aim is to encourage meetings between mathematicians and possibly specialists from other fields, who are interested by a theme under development, in order to increase contacts between members of these communities as well as to facilitate the integration of young people, Ph.D. students or young Ph.D. holders.

There are currently three GDRE in mathematics : GRIFGA, GREFI-MEFI and a GDRE in the field of Representation Theory.

An Italian-French GDRE in Algebraic Geometry (GRIFGA)

The European Research Network called the “Italian-French GDRE in Algebraic Geometry” was established by way of an agreement between the French CNRS and the Italian INdAM.

It is managed by Lucia Caporaso (Roma Tre) for the Italian part and by Olivier Debarre (Ecole Normale Supérieure) for the French part.

The starting point of its research, focused on algebraic geometry and complex geometry, are the two European schools, French and Italian, both very active in this field. The aim of this project is to significantly strengthen and promote the personal ties or the existing cooperation between the researchers from the two countries. Its long term goal is to provide a common space for training of Ph.D. students and researchers through participation in joint events but also through financial support of short, medium and (possibly) long term visits.

Beyond the scientific goals, the main objective is to promote mobility among young Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows, academics and all other researchers, between France and Italy.

What is at stake in terms of the mobility and the training of young people, is a mixture of cultures and the integration of young Italians within French teams and vice versa.

The resources employed in order to achieve these aims are destined to support two sorts of actions :

1/ The organization of thematic schools and conferences The principle is that any project of one of the two teams is open to the other while travelling expenses of junior are given in priority over other expenses.

2/ Research visits abroad Visits for young people and which last around one month are prioritized. The idea is to focus on contexts where cooperation or common themes already exist, so that guests can most immediately benefit from them on the scientific level and as a result lay the foundations for future visits. Then, one might consider longer stays from one to three months which would still be financed by the GDRE. There are also plans to fund short visits for seminars of more senior researchers.

The French-Italian GDRE on Mathematics and Physics (GDR 2876)

The GDRE GREFI-MEFI is a French-Italian European Research Network. It was founded in 2005 by the CNRS and the INdAM. It is composed of 48 French and 32 Italian laboratories.

Its mission is to facilitate scientific exchanges between France and Italy in the following fields :
Equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics
The theory of probability
Particle systems
Dynamical systems

It is funded by the CNRS, the INdAM and the Italian embassy in Paris.

GDRE website

French-British European Research Network in Representation Theory

Persons in charge : Bernard Leclerc (University of Caen) and Meinolf Geck (University of Aberdeen). Partners : EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council)

The GDRE was founded in 2008. Its aim is to federate the numerous researchers in France and in the United Kingdom, who work on representation theory of groups and algebras (around a hundred on each side of the channel).

The GDRE supports, both in France and United Kingdom (ce n'est pas la même chose..), scientific events related to these topics, as well as helps Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows and young researchers, should they be willing to make research stays on the other side of the channel.
