Signature of the UMI « Solomon Lefschetz Laboratory » (LaSoL) located in Cuernavaca, Mexico

16 mai 2017

On April 25th, the creation agreement of a UMI between the CNRS, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) was signed as part of the Days dedicated to the International Joint Units (UMI) of Americas which took place in Mexico.

Organised every second year, alternating with the Asia Days, the Days dedicated to the UMI of the Americas gave the opportunity to all the UMI actors (laboratory directors and scientists assigned in the units) and to the partners representatives to exchange on their activities with the CNRS governing board and international funding agencies. The operational issues, structures networking and challenges to come could be addressed in the framework of dedicated round tables.

This year, the Days dedicated to the UMI of the Americas took place in Mexico on April 25th and 26th. To close the event, the CNRS and its Mexican partners, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), signed the agreement implementing the new UMI devoted to Mathematics : the Solomon Lefschetz Laboratory (LaSoL), located on the Cuernavaca Campus near Mexico.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Enrique Graue Wiechers, UNAM rector, Dr. Enrique Cabrero Mendoza, General Director of CONACYT, and Christoph Sorger, CNRS-INSMI Director. The UMI is led by Prof. José Seade (UNAM), Prof. Hamish Short (AMU) as his co-director.

The UMI Days were followed by a two days conference in mathematics, the purpose of which being the launch of the new UMI. The conference/workshop took place in Cuernavaca on April 27th and 28th.
