Laboratory directors meet to launch celebrations for CNRS’ 80th anniversary year

Institutional matters

CNRS’ anniversary year will begin on February 1 and be launched at the Maison de la Mutualité during the first convention of laboratory directors of CNRS and its partners. Other high points will follow throughout the 2019 to celebrate CNRS’ 80th birthday.

On October 19, 1939, the Centre national de la recherche scientifique was born. Since then, the research body has accompanied great social changes, faithful to the values dear to Jean Perrin, its founding father, winner of the Nobel prize for physics: freedom in research, advances in understanding, teamwork, scientific excellence, innovation and transfer, social progress, and diffusion of scientific culture. In 2019 CNRS is celebrating its 80-year existence and its experiences—80 years of building new worlds.

The year will be marked by celebrations throughout France and abroad.

The first convention of laboratory directors

Antoine Petit, President and Managing Director of CNRS, and the body’s executives will meet for the first time with almost one thousand laboratory directors from CNRS and its partners during a convention organized at the Maison de la Mutualité on February 1, 2019. This day will be an occasion for all those involved to remind themselves of CNRS’ priorities. Maintaining excellence in French research and spreading it worldwide, multiplying social and economic partnerships and promoting open science will among the topics for discussion.

The convention will be punctuated by keynote talks from celebrities in the research world, such as Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, Gérard Mourou, winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize for Physics, and Marie-Noëlle Séméria, Director of Research and Development at Total. Frédérique Vidal, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation will give the closing keynote.
