Gérard Mégie Foundation

Letter from Bernard Larrouturou, Director Général of CNRS

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,

Following the death of Professor Gérard Mégie, a proposal to establish the Gérard Mégie Foundation as a way of honoring his accomplishments and his person through the funding of a Gérard Mégie Prize was presented to the French Academy of Sciences, of which Gérard Mégie was an eminent and very devoted member.

The idea of establishing a Gérard Mégie Grand Prize of the French Academy of Sciences was accepted by the Academy on December 6, 2004 when presented by Jean Dercourt, Perpetual Secretary, who urged its adoption. The Prize will "honor a research scientist or team, from France or abroad, for outstanding research accomplishments in the field of atmospheric, oceanic and cryospheric science and interactions". Members of the Academy will comprise the selection jury for the prize winners, thereby lending full credibility and renown to this Prize.

A Grand Prize of the Academy of Sciences is a very high distinction which entails a money prize of at least 15,000 euro granted to each year's winner. This sum supposes that the Foundation will collect a capital endowment whose interest earnings will ensure the perennity of the Prize. Management of the endowment will be entrusted to the Academy of Sciences.

I have the honor to chair the organizing committee for the Gérard Mégie Foundation. Contribution to the prize fund is open not only to organizations but also to individuals. It is important that each one of us, friend or colleague, has the opportunity to contribute to this prize, which we have all been so eager to see established. You will find enclosed the elements necessary for making a contribution to the Gérard Mégie Foundation. You will receive another letter from me in a few months informing you of the results of our fundraising efforts and the steps that are to follow.

With heartfelt thanks for your support of the committee's determined efforts to perpetuate the memory of a dear friend and colleague, and to promote scientific progress in the fields to which Gérard Mégie applied his immense talents, I remain

Sincerely yours,

Bernard Larrouturou
Director Général
