PEPR For a habitable Earth (TRANSFORM)

Working together to restore the Earth’s habitability

Faced with the rapid deterioration of living conditions on Earth, how can we rethink our relationship with other living beings and work together to build a desirable future? The TRANSFORM research programme is exploring the biophysical and social processes that threaten our planet’s habitability, and collectively imagining alternatives to the current model. The challenge is to bring together science, the arts and civil society to invent new balances, in both the North and the South.

  • Exploration national research programme
  • Programme leaders: CNRS, IRD
  • Programme directors:
    • Stéphanie Vermeersch - CNRS
    • Priscilla Duboz - CNRS (OHMI Téssékéré)
    • Nicolas Gratiot - IRD
  • Budget: 50 M€
  • Duration: 10 years (2026 to 2036)

To meet this challenge, the programme takes a transdisciplinary approach, combining ecology, humanities and social sciences, earth sciences and the arts. It also aims to strengthen the co-construction of knowledge with civil society on the basis of surveys, observations and shared experiences in the field. This objective requires the renewal of working tools and methods in order to characterise the social, political and legal conditions for the deployment of alternatives
resulting from collaborative actions involving artists, associations and more broadly, civil society.

The applications of this programme could transform our relationship with the world: the development of more inclusive public policies, the creation of legal tools adapted to ecological issues, and the emergence of meaningful artistic and cultural projects. Through collaborative experiments, the aim is to offer tangible responses to current crises, while paving the way for a renewed vision of our common future.
