The 'Numpex' (software building blocks for future 'exascale machines') exploratory PEPR

Preparing for the future of computing: meeting the exascale challenge

The NumPEx programme is preparing France for a new technological revolution: exascale computing, capable of performing billions of billions of operations per second. Its ambition is to design the software building blocks, tools and applications that will enable these future machines to be fully exploited for scientific research and national and European industrial competitiveness.

  • Exploration national research programme
  • Programme leaders : CEA, CNRS, INRIA
  • Programme directors:
    • Mickaël Krajecki - CNRS
    • Jean-Yves Berthou - Inria
    • Jérôme Bobin - CEA
  • Budget : €40.8m
  • Duration: 6 years (2023 to 2029)

This programme draws on key disciplines: high-performance computing, big data analysis and artificial intelligence. These technologies enable complex phenomena to be modelled, colossal volumes of data to be processed and strategic decisions to be informed. However, deploying them at exascale level poses major challenges, particularly in terms of energy efficiency, data management and adapting software to new architectures.

Potential applications cover a wide range of areas, including more accurate climate forecasts, advances in health and biology, transport optimisation, the development of innovative materials and smart energy management. These tools will help address major societal and environmental challenges while accelerating industrial innovation.

Beyond scientific advances, NumPEx represents a major lever for France’s digital sovereignty and economic competitiveness. By structuring a national high-performance computing ecosystem and promoting European cooperation, the programme strengthens France’s position as a key player in the global digital revolution. It supports training, innovation and the transition to an economy based on data mastery and sustainable technologies.
