CNRS chairman and CEO Antoine Petit has named Adeline Nazarenko to head the CNRS Institute for Information Sciences and their Interactions, effective February 1, 2023. She takes over from Ali Charara, who held the position from January 2019.

A professor of computer science, Adeline Nazarenko specialises in the automatic processing of languages. Her research focuses on the semantic analysis of texts and information access methods. For the past decade she has concentrated on analysing legal texts in view of developing the legal semantic web.

Nazarenko studied at the École Normale Supérieure, earning an advanced teaching degree in contemporary literature and a doctorate in computer science with a thesis at the IBM France Scientific Centre. In 1996 she joined the Laboratoire d’Informatique de Paris Nord (Northern Paris Computer Science Lab), operated jointly by CNRS and the Université Sorbonne Paris Nord. As a research team leader and director of the university’s computer science department, she participated in various European-scale projects and supervised the work of some 20 PhD students. A proponent of interdisciplinary dialogue, she played an active role in the creation and direction of the laboratory of excellence “Empirical Foundations of Linguistics”, founded in 2011.

In 2014 Nazarenko joined the CNRS Institute for Information Sciences and their Interactions as a project manager. In 2016 she was promoted to deputy scientific director and in January 2022 launched the CNRS Mission for Scientific Expertise, heading its operations until her nomination as institute director. She assumed her new functions on February 1, 2023.
